Frequently Asked Questions
There can be lots of questions that come up when you’re trying to make a decision about whether to see a therapist. If you have a question that we haven’t answered in our FAQ, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Do I need a referral?
You are more than welcome to come to see one of our therapists without a referral from another health or medical professional. However, if you are hoping to access a Medicare rebate, a Referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from treating GP or Paediatrician/Psychiatrist is necessary. Health fund rebates may be accessible for some therapies. Marsden Health also work with NDIS participants who are self or plan-managed.
What is my “out of pocket” cost for therapy sessions at Marsden Health?
Unlike seeing a GP, when you see a psychologist or other allied health professional you will need to pay in full and then claim the rebate from Medicare if applicable. If you do have a valid Referral, we may be able to process your Medicare rebate. The amount you receive back from Medicare will vary, depending on who you are seeing. Please refer to the Medicare website or ask our Client Engagement Team for further details.
Is the information I share with Marsden Health confidential?
As part of providing a mental health service to you, we will need to collect and record personal information that is relevant to your current situation. This information is a necessary part of the assessment and intervention/support that is provided. You do not have to give all of your personal information, this is completely up to you.
The information that is collected by your therapist is treated with the utmost care and is confidential, which means that it will not be shared with anyone outside of Marsden Health without your permission. There are limitations to this by law, including if there is a risk of harm to someone or if documents are subpoenaed by court.
At any stage, you may request access to your file and we will happily give you any information we have. We want you to know that any information we record is done so with the highest level of respect for you. This is a record of your story and your engagement with us, and we aim to treat this with very high regard.
Do I need an assessment or therapy booking?
Unsure what to book?
If you are unsure what appointment type you need, contact our Client Engagement Team. They can assist you by booking you an initial intake appointment with one of our neuropsychologists. During this appointment you can discuss your concerns and reason for referral and they will help guide you to either an assessment or for ongoing therapy and support.
What to do next?
If you think you are ready to make a booking, you can contact the clinic by calling (02) 9139 0126 or via email info@marsdenhealth.com.au. Our friendly Client Engagement Team are available to help you.
If you want to claim the Medicare rebate on your sessions, you will need to book an appointment with your GP to arrange a referral and Mental Health Care Plan. Make sure the referral is addressed to Marsden Health and that it states the number of sessions approved.
Who to contact for immediate support out of hours?
Marsden Health is not a crisis-service, our therapists work within “business hours” and do not offer after-hours support. In any emergency, we recommend you attend your nearest hospital emergency department or call 000. In other cases, where you need support after hours or while waiting to be seen, the following services may be of assistance:
- Kids helpline (age 5-25), kidshelpline.com.au, 1800 55 1800
- 24hr mental health line (NSW health) 1800 011 511
- Lifeline (all ages), lifeline.org.au, 13 11 14
- Suicide Call Back (ages 15+), suicidecallbackservice.org.au, 1300 659 467
- Your family GP is also a crucial resource for primary health needs.
