School Support

There are so many reasons why kids might be struggling at school. From school refusal or “school can’t” to emotional difficulties and even bullying, schools may not be aware of the extent of these challenges. That’s why we believe it’s so important to open up lines of communication and allow kids to gain support in their school environment.

About this therapy

At the Kids Clinic, our clinicians are able to work with parents and school educators to address a child’s unique challenges and tackle the difficulties they’re facing in the school environment head-on.

Our approach

While every session and client relationship looks different, our approach to offering School Support involves:

  • Our clinicians going into schools and observing kids in their school environment, seeing how they learn, what areas they’re struggling with along with their interaction with peers
  • Meeting with teachers regularly to coordinate services, ensuring all providers are on the same page when working with your child
  • Providing training and education to educators and schools, running workshops to enable teachers to better understand children’s unique needs
  • Empowering teaching staff with training and support to assist kids with specific needs, such as Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) in Autistic children

Integrative support

While every session looks different, our approach to supporting children and adolescents with school related challenges leverages:

  • Understanding core emotional needs
  • Self-determination and self-advocacy
  • Collaboration with schools/teachers
  • Strengths-based focus
  • Cognitive and neuropsychology

How we’ll monitor your child’s progress

It’s important to us that you feel like your child is moving forward in therapy. This is why we make sure that we have conversations about whether the therapy is working or not. This process of getting your feedback can help your therapist adjust their approach to meet your child’s needs better.

To keep your child moving forward, we’ll use a range of methods to track their progress, such as:

  • We’ll regularly check-in on your child’s wellbeing using digital measures
  • We’ll use verbal check-ins to reflect on progress with specific behaviours
  • We’ll leverage standardised questionnaires at the beginning and end of intervention
  • We’ll encourage you to sit in on some sessions to ensure you’re part of the therapy process
  • For NDIS clients, we’ll use standardised reporting procedures to ensure we’re working towards your child’s NDIS goals
